QUALITY OF LIFE, COPING STYLES AND SOCIAL SUPPORT IN ATTEMPTED SUICIDE CASE CONTROL STUDY

Abstract


Suicide has a multi-factorial etiology, but some of the important
psychosocial variables like quality of life, coping styles and social support are less addressed
issues.AIM-The present study aimed to study the quality of life, coping styles and social support in
suicide attempters and controls thereby attempting to identify risk factors and protective factors of
suicide.MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY-A total of 30 consecutive suicide attempters were
compared with age, gender and marital status matched controls using COPE inventory,
Multidimensional scale of Perceived Social Support and WHO QOL-BREF.RESULTS-Attempters had
significantly lower adaptive coping skills, social support and lower quality of life than
controls.CONCLUSION-The present findings suggest that training individuals for to use more
adaptive coping skills, enhancing social support and promoting good physical, psychological and
environmental well-being seem to be effective preventive strategies against suicide attempts.
