BILATERAL GENU VALGUM SURGICALLY TREATED BY HEMIEPIPHYSEODESIS USING GROWTH MODULATION PLATE- A CASE REPORT

BHARATHIDASAN M

Abstract

Angular deformities around the knee joint in skeletally immature children are treated with
methods of reversible hemiepiphysiodesis like staples, transphyseal screw and figure of eight plate.
Hemiepiphysiodesis using figure of eight plate has showed good results with advantage being faster
correction, less complications and can be used in younger age. Case report.14 yrs boy came with
bilateral idiopathic genu valgum with inter-malleolar distance of 24cm, inter-condylar distance of
0.5cm. Hemiepiphysiodesis using figure of eight plate done. Outcome assessment was done clinically
with calculation of inter-malleolar inter-condylar distance and radiologically with mechanical and
anatomical axis.Results. Rate of correction of inter-malleolar and inter-condylar distance was 0.9cm
and 0.33cm per month respectively. Rate of correction of mechanical and tibio-femoral axis was
1.3degree and 1.16degree per month respectively. Conclusion Reversible hemiepiphysiodesis using
figure of eight plate is effective method with minimal complications and faster rates of correction.
