A RARE CAUSE OF HEMATURIA- PRIMARY HYPEROXALURIA

PREETHI SUBRAMANIAN K SUBRAMANIAN

Abstract

A 9 year old male child presented with
episodic, painless, gross haematuria with two similar
episodes in the past. Similar history of renal calculi in the
mother was present. After ruling out causes of gross
haematuria like UTI, IgA nephropathy etc second line
investigations were sent. Opthalmological examination
showed oxalate crystals in the retina. 24 hour urinary oxalate
levels showed borderline elevation. No other features of
systemic oxalosis were seen. A therapeutic trial of sodium
bicarbonate and pyridoxine was given. Child showed dramatic
improvement with macroscopic clearance in 4 days and
microscopic clearance in 2 weeks. This case is presented for
its rarity and isolated retinal crystals and haematuria without
systemic oxalosis
